DETAILED VERSION

Selection Criteria
Selection each week is based on several factors, the main one being how often you reply to the 'Availability' emails each week, and to a lesser extent on your cricketing ability and loyalty to the club. This selection process will only be enacted on occasions throughout the season when more than 11 regular players are available for selection. It is mainly designed to reward people for making the skipper's life a lot easier. So basically the team will pick itself each week, (ie) the players will decide their own fate. If you are not going to be available for a period of up to 3 weeks, simply let the skipper know, who will note it down on your behalf. This will save you replying each week while you're temporarily unavailable.

Preference for selection will be given to those players who are part of the 'Playing Squad', (ie) those players who wish to participate in games throughout the season on a regular or semi regular basis, and also reply to the weekly 'Availability' emails. (See current 'Playing Squad' above).

Only the 'Playing Squad' members need reply each week, but anyone else can declare their availability for selection, but will only be selected if the team is short of regular players. There are exceptions however - see 'Nepotism Rule' below. Also, if you fail to reply to the availability email in 4 consecutive weeks, it will be assumed you are no longer interested in being a 'Playing Squad' member and you will automatically be removed from the 'Playing Squad', but can rejoin the squad (alas with a lot less selection points), simply by letting the skipper know and buying him a couple of beers after your first game back!

A table is produced at 2pm every Wed with a running count of each players points, and selection will be based on how high you are on the list and the requirements of a 'balanced team' of batsmen and bowlers, (ie) there must be at least 5 'recognised' bowlers selected if available. But the higher up the list, the more likely you will be selected.

This selection criteria is always a work in motion, and will be continually changed and adapted till the fairest system is found. Therefore these are not hard and fast rules, and other factors such as opposition strength etc, will be looked at before any decision is made.

Total Selection Points = Availability Points + Performance Points + Loyalty Points

Availability Points
Players are rewarded for replying to the weekly 'Availability' email by midday Wed each week. If you reply (or are contacted) after the deadline, even if declaring your availability, you gain 'Availability' points. If you declare 'Available' or 'Available if Short' and are not selected to play, you will still get the full points.

Points are awarded as follows:

8 pts    Reply to weekly email as  'Available'              (Before 2pm Wed)
8 pts    Reply to weekly email as  'Available if short'  (Before 2pm Wed)
8 pts    Reply to weekly email as  'Unavailable'           (Before 2pm Wed)
0 pts    No reply to weekly email

Performance Points
These are based on your cricketing ability. Just a quick note here. Nepotists Cricket Club never has (or ever will be) purely about cricketing ability, and rightly so, as the ethos of the club has always been about having a run around on top class cricket fields with mates on a Sunday afternoon, without any 'League' mentality, or the result of the match being everything, but of course competitive; followed by a few beers and a bit of banter in the bar after the game. But this cricketing ability section is a necessary addition designed to balance out the team, as opposed to selecting a team based purely on email replies. Otherwise for example, the team could end up with 11 batsmen one week or 11 bowlers another week. This will also help any temporary or future skippers to be able to fall straight into the job if so required with minimal effort, and will hopefully take away from the Nepotists skipper the long term frustrating part of continually chasing up players for availability.

You are only awarded the full Performance Points for either your batting or bowling (whichever is highest), plus 1 extra Performance Point if both your batting and bowling are each 3 pts or higher (All Rounder).

Batting and bowling rankings are based on you're 'career' record with the club, not just the current season. If it is your first year or you haven't played enough games to qualify, below is what you need to do to qualify:

Batting Qualification: Been dismissed 5 times, or have scored 200 runs and been to the crease 5 times (including not outs).
Bowling Qualification: Bowled 30 overs and bowled in at least 5 matches.

For those who haven't qualified, a subjective evaluation will be made at 'nets' by the skipper, or over the first few games you play. The skipper will select the lowest levels of batting and bowling which he thinks you may achieve once you have qualified, and hopefully this will go up as you play more games and the season wears on.

These rankings can fluctuate throughout the season for newer players until 'form' has been established, but is unlikely to change too much for longer term players during the current season.

Performance Points below are awarded each week regardless of whether you reply to the weekly 'Availability' email:

Batting
5 pts    Batting average is 40 runs or more
4 pts    Batting average  is between 30 and 40 runs
3 pts    Batting average is between 20 and 30 runs
2 pt      Batting average is between 10 and 20 runs
1 pt      Batting average is less than 10 runs

Bowling
Bowling points are based equally on your bowling average (runs per wicket) and economy rate (runs per over), then divided by 2 to give a final ranking out of 5 (Rounded up).

Average
5 pts    Bowling average is less than 15 runs per wicket
4 pts    Bowling average is between 15 and 20 runs per wicket
3 pts    Bowling average is between 20 and 25 runs per wicket
2 pts    Bowling average is between 25 and 30 runs per wicket
1 pt      Bowling average is more than 30 runs per wicket

Economy
5 pts    Economy rate is less than 4.5 runs per over
4 pts    Economy rate is between 4.5 and 5.0 runs per over
3 pts    Economy rate is between 5.0 and 5.5 runs per over
2 pts    Economy rate is between 5.5 and 6.0 runs per over
1 pt      Economy rate is more than 6 runs per over

Wicket Keeper

The wicket keeper is a specialist position, and will be regarded the same as a Level 3 bowler for the sake of completeness.
3 pts    Wicketkeeper

Loyalty Points
You are awarded 1 extra point each week for every Nepotists CC event (below) you have attended in the previous 12 months before the current game, or have played 50+ career games for the Nepotists. (eg) If you've attended '2 out of the 3' nets at Lords + attended the 'AGM' + been on the 'Oxford Tour', you get 3 extra points per week for every game that is up for selection.

Loyalty Points below are awarded each week regardless of whether you reply to the weekly 'Availability' email:

1 pt    If you attend '2 out of the 3' nets at Lords pre season (either netting or socialising)
1 pt    If you attend the Nepotists CC 'Annual General Meeting' (AGM)
1 pt    If you attend the Devon Golf Tour in July for at least 1 day, even if you don't play
1 pt    If you attend the Oxford Cricket Tour in Aug for a least 1 day, even if you don't play
1 pt    If you have played 50 or more career games for Nepotists CC

Lifeline
Each player is granted one 'Lifeline', which means your first 'No Reply' to the weekly email will be disregarded and you will be granted points as if you replied 'Unavailable', even if you are subsequently selected to play. After you've used up your 'Lifeline', you will receive no points for any further 'No Replies'. (ie) By not replying to the weekly email you lose 8 points.

Nepotism Rule
Exceptions will be made for:

1) Players who have been members of the club for more than 15 years, and only play very infrequently, sometimes years apart.
2) Players who have been part of the 'Playing Squad' in recent years, and are visiting the UK for a short period.

Under most circumstances a place in the team would be made available to these players.

Examples

Example 1
If you are a Level 3 batsman and a Level 1 bowler, and you reply to the weekly email as 'Available' or 'Available if Short' before 2pm Wed, you will receive 11 points for that week.
(ie) 3 (batting pts) + 0 (bowling pts) + 8 (email reply pts) + 0 (loyalty pts)  = 11pts

Example 2
If you are a Level 4 batsman and a Level 3 bowler, and you reply to the weekly email as 'Unavailable' before 2pm Wed, and you have also been on the 'Oxford Tour', plus attended the 'AGM', you will receive 15 points for that week.
(ie) 4 (batting pts) + 1 (allrounder pt) + 8 (email reply pts) + 2 (loyalty pts) = 15 pts

Example 3
If you are a Level 3 batsman and a Level 5 bowler, plus have attend '2 out of the 3' nets, and you don't reply to the weekly email before 2pm Wed, you will receive 7 points for that week.
(ie) 1 (allrounder pt) + 5 (bowling pts) + 0 (email reply pts) + 1 (loyalty pt) = 7 pts
